December Character Development Theme: Physical Fitness

Dear Parents,

PHYSICAL FITNESS MEANS TAKING CARE OF OUR BODIES WITH HEALTHY EXERCISE!

This month’s lesson covers physical fitness. Martial arts offers wonderful, healthy exercise for children, so they’re off to a good start – however, it is important that they understand why physical fitness is so important. Regularly engaging in healthy exercise improves every part of the body: muscles, bones, heart, and even brain.

How can you help?

  • Make physical activity part of your family’s routine. Go on walks together (especially great if you have a dog that needs walking!), go biking, drive to a new park and explore.
  • Prevent couch potatoes from growing! Set caps on the amount of time your child can spend watching television or playing video games per day. If needed, enact a household rule that no one can watch TV or play games until they have completed some physical activity (the CDC recommends that children ages 6 to 17 get at least an hour of physical activity per day).
  • Location and weather permitting, encourage your children to play outside.
  • Make sure your child is following other healthy habits such as washing hands, sneezing or coughing into the elbow, eating healthy foods in healthy amounts, taking vitamins as needed, and brushing teeth. These are all important aspects of physical fitness.
